Help us build a house!
Our first day of volunteer labor was October 10, 2009, for house #6 in a flurry of activity rarely seen in Kittanning. The Amish are well-known for their barn-raising skills, building a barn in a day. Our affiliate did pretty well, considering that many are just learning how to frame a house or whatever their assignment was for the day. A big thank you goes out to the Kittanning Borough Council for closing Grant Ave for the day to allow work to progress on all sides of the house site.
Roughly 35 volunteers teamed up to complete various tasks under the expert supervision of Jim Butler (BNB Contracting), Tony Guzzo of Guzzo Construction, and Paul Klukan, a long-term Habitat volunteer. Jim Butler's crew was most visible at first installing floor joists and decking on top of the basement walls. Another team under Tony Guzzo built wall sections in Grant Ave and yet another small crew under Paul Klukan created endwall roof trusses and other smaller, yet critical sections of the house-to-be.
In mid-afternoon, J.R. Crane showed up and wall sections were hoisted into place and nailed off. Installing the top plate was underway in short order and, as soon as that was complete, J.R. started swinging roof trusses into position. When those were in place, Jim Butler, Jimmy Edwards, Paul Klukan, and Carl Bromley started installing roof sheathing as fast as volunteers on the ground could hand them up. Halogen lights allowed work to proceed well into the evening. It was a fantastic day, going from just a basement in the morning to a closed-in house shell by evening.
We're always looking for volunteers willing to swing a hammer or measure a board! We work weekends, Saturday and Sunday, and have space available for anyone who would like to come help. Looking for a BIG Family!
Armstrong Habitat for Humanity is looking for a family of six or more to place in a house in Kittanning. The house is very large and would be perfect for a large family. It is also in need of extensive repairs and is a perfect project for AHFH and a large family. If you have a big family and are interested in low-cost alternative housing--or if you know a family that would be--please click the Guideline and Application for Housing link below.
Armstrong Habitat for Humanity is a locally run affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing organization. Habitat for Humanity works in partnership with people in need to build and renovate decent, affordable housing. The houses then are sold to those in need at no profit and with no interest charged.
Volunteers provide most of the labor, and individual and corporate donors provide money and materials to build Habitat houses. Partner families themselves invest hundreds of hours of labor - "sweat equity" - into building their homes and the homes of others. Their mortgage payments go into a revolving Fund for Humanity that is used to build more houses.
